It’s three days before the Major starts. Three days! We can barely contain our excitement. And bodily fluids (we’re wetting ourselves nothing weird).

When we left you, Astralis and Cloud9 were doing a pretty good job of drowning their RMR sorrows with some decent performances in Brazy Party.

And, that continued in playoffs.

Astralis silenced Apeks despite jkaem continuing his rampage, and Cloud9 saw off paiN in their quarter-final.

In semis, it got trickier, but both of our protagonists emerged alive. Astralis even ended 9INE’s 16 game winning streak on Vertigo in double OT, before the Poles reverted to form on Ancient.

Cloud9, meanwhile, brought interz out of the basement for their semi-final against OG after HObbit encountered an “eye problem.” And, he didn’t even do bad — he got a 1.16 rating in the one map he played, helping C9 win 2-1.

buster, if you were wondering, only managed a 0.98. Ouch.

Nevertheless, we got the final we all wanted.

Ax1le and sh1ro against device and blameF. Buzz against buster. Is there any better way to spend a Wednesday evening than this? Don’t answer that.

The two sides converted their map picks, taking us to a decider on Inferno.

A decider that, ultimately, never really felt in Astralis’ control. The Danes won both pistols but could never get going in the gun rounds. They even got 3K’d by nafany, for god’s sake.

Just like that, it was over. Cloud9 were crowned as the best team not at the Major, and even pocketed $133k in the process.

Is that enough for a new IGL? We’re asking for a friend.

m0NESY makes the world go round

We’ll keep this brief.

G2 have picked up a new sponsor - the controversial CSGORoll. Unfortunately, that’s just something you have to deal with in esports if you want to keep things free to watch. There’s going to be some dodgy sponsors, and gambling companies have money.

That should probably be a hint into whether or not you should start gambling. Look how much money they can spunk up the wall to G2.

The real controversy appears to be people being upset that m0NESY was used in G2’s announcement video, just one day after turning 18.

As if that makes any difference.

The kid is now old enough to gamble, no matter how long ago he turned 18. Why wouldn’t he be used for this? It’s just another case of people trying a bit too hard to be more annoyed about something than they should be.

Gambling sponsors, not ideal. But let’s keep the discussion on that.

Caster Carousel

We got a taste at the Brazy Party, but now it’s official. The Caster Carousel has produced a new combination with some old heads: HenryG and Anders are now a partnership.

Henry’s announcement tweet directly mentions that they’re trying to “experiment with new partners” in their “mature years” and that the reason he and Anders have teamed up is to “Lay a sexy foundation for CS2.” Is this a sex thing? No judgment from us, we’d just like to know. Or actually, scratch that.

To rewind, if you joined us during the COVID years, you might not be as familiar with HenryG as you are with Anders. That’s because he was spending his 2021-2022 advertising his NFTs on Twitter. It's not like you'd be able to tell from the way his profile is set up now, so we'd forgive you for not knowing.

Henry is an iconic caster in his own right with plenty of history in the game. Plus, Brazy Party has shown us that he and Anders do work quite well as a pairing. It’s a fitting end to CS:GO that some of our most senior (non-canceled) casters are pairing up together for one last ride.

Next stop on that ride: Paris. What do you mean HenryG won't be at the Major? Well, at least him and Anders can fit in some practice. Oh, Anders is at the Major… Awkward.

The fire has gone out

Life in esports exists on a tightrope. As a player, you’re one move away from having to find a day job, and simultaneously one move away from making more money than you could dream of, travelling the world playing against the very best.

As a team, you’re one roster move away from greatness, and one bad roster away from absolution.

In Copenhagen Flames’ case, it wasn’t even a bad roster. It was one roster that wasn’t worth selling for half a million, one roster that didn’t have all five players moving on to bigger and better things.

After selling all of their good players - again - and the coach that built the team, you’d be forgiven for thinking that CPH Flames would be swimming in cash. Au contraire - such is the fragility of existence as one of esports’ smaller organisations, CPH Flames were in trouble.

We’ve seen Heroic have had similar issues, and it’s not wholly surprising. CSGO isn’t that profitable, and when that’s the only game you’re in, it’s harder to monetise it. There’s no LEC money, no Dota 2 money, just CSGO.

And you’re not in either of the big leagues, either. What sponsor cares?

CPH Flames existed as a feeder team - they trusted their scouting and their recruitment to find cheap, young players and flip them for cash. But the problem is, even the most foolproof recruitment system will miss sometimes.

Players are still human, and they will clash or disagree or just simply go off-the-boil. regali was supposed to be the next cash cow, and his lack of roster move has probably been the straw that broke the camel’s back.

We suppose that makes it clear as to why he was benched.
