Groups recap: FISSURE Playground
So, remember when we attempted to preview how FISSURE Playground 1 would go in our last edition?
Yeah… about that. Let’s just say pretty much everything we predicted went the other way.
Now, you could say we’re terrible at this – and fair enough – but hear us out: If every single prediction is wrong, doesn’t that make us some kind of reverse oracle? Geniuses, but backwards?
Please. We’ve hit rock bottom. Just nod and agree.
Let’s start with the (very) few things we got right. GamerLegion topped Group A, powered by a strong debut from budget ZywOo, while Wildcard completely tanked. Maybe kicking your IGL and your star AWPer wasn’t the brightest idea…
Then there’s FURIA, one of the big surprises of the tournament, and not in a good way. Turns out they’re bad again.
They came in as one of the favourites, but couldn’t even qualify for Playoffs after back-to-back losses to the revamped SAW. We’re starting to think the secret to unlocking prime YEKINDAR is to never actually sign him.
As for Group B… well, we told you anything could happen.
Lynn Vision went undefeated and locked in their spot at the Sava Center in a way no one expected but everyone saw coming. Along the way, they dropped a strong contender for Play of the Year with this ridiculous 1v5 from z4kr.
Meanwhile, Rare Atom finished dead last, and 3DMAX pulled off a second-place finish. The real disappointment here? paiN. This was one of the softer groups on paper, and they completely whiffed. Outside of snow, no one on the team looked capable of keeping up.
And even crazier than Lynn Vision going undefeated or Major semifinalists missing Playoffs is the fact that TYLOO topped Group C… with their coach standing in.
How the f-ck, you ask? Well, it’s actually pretty simple: JamYoung.
As for Virtus.Pro, we have to give credit where it’s due. We didn’t think it was possible, but they’ve managed to become even worse than before by placing rock bottom, below MIBR and Astralis. That’s an accomplishment in itself.
Finally, Group D might’ve shown us that even HEROIC have a limit to how many times they can successfully rebuild.
Okay, maybe we’re overreacting – it is their first tournament with this lineup – but finishing dead last in a group with BIG, Complexity, and BetBoom? Not exactly a promising start.
Lucky for BetBoom, they found themselves in the decider BO3 against BIG. Since BIG seems to qualify only for those random tier 12 LANs in Germany, the Russians secured the last Playoff spot in Group D behind Complexity.
