Game update & shutdown
Hey guys, Valve here.
So, we heard you wanted a working anticheat and to stop dying behind walls? Boring.
Instead, here are some weekly missions and five new community maps no one’s gonna touch.
Oh, and remember that Classic Offensive mod we gave the green light to seven years ago and everyone loved? Yeah, we just nuked it.
Anyway, that’s all from us. Catch you in three months. Maybe.
To the community’s surprise and frustration, the developers of the Classic Offensive mod announced they had to cancel the project this week. Valve sent them a cease and desist (legal speak for “stop immediately”), where they claim that Classic Offensive would be distributing "derivative content" based on their intellectual property.
Imagine pouring eight years into a project you love – waiting patiently for the day you can finally share it with the world – only to have the rug pulled out from under you at the very last minute. And that’s after being told you had full permission to do it.
“Our only mistake was to be passionate about Counter-Strike”, said one CS:CO dev. Absolutely heartbreaking.
And just when everyone thought all hope was lost, Valve came to the rescue with a brand new update… and delivered exactly what we expected.
The ‘Mission Possible’ update brings weekly missions that reward XP, along with a fresh batch of community maps: Jura, Grail, Agency, Dogtown, and Brewery. Plus, some minor audio tweaks and bug fixes.
So, this pretty much confirms the death of Operations, right?
We now have every core piece of an Operation as individual features. Let’s just hope they actually update this stuff regularly with fresh ideas. Then again, knowing Valve, we’ll probably be stuck in a never-ending loop of ‘Win 15 rounds on Inferno’ missions for the next six months.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a CS update without a game-breaking bug to top it all off.
Not even Tom Cruise could save this one.
